Twin-Screw Compounding & Process Optimization for Shear Sensitive Materials
March 10, 2026 - 04:15 PM
This presentation highlights the various components of the twin-screw extrusion system and how they can be modified for shear & heat-sensitive materials. • Extruder geometry: The higher diameter ratio of the MEGAvolume series twin-screw extruder provides a reduced shear rate and an increased free volume, allowing for decreased screw speed and improved feed intake without excessive temperature rise. • Screw design: Special elements are selected for their compounding effect with a reduced overall shear input. • Downstream Equipment: A melt pump lessens the pumping requirement off the twin screw. In case of materials that cannot tolerate a melt pump, Coperion’s Kombiplast system fully decouples the twin-screw from the pumping equipment, eliminating product temperature rise as a result of pressurization. A downstream single screw handles the pumping requirement.
